Found this on Amazon and I picked it up to start building more frames. I’m not the most creative LEGO builder so it helps to have someone else’s ideas to work from. It contains parts to construct four frames and costs $38.96, for a cost of $9.74 per frame. It was fun to build with my kids and has a lot of joints and useful pieces. Each frame contains over 100 pieces, so price per piece is below $.10. The Assault Squad is also available in purple at the same price. (The frame images show slightly different weapons for one of the frames, but that’s because in one color it has swords in hand and guns on the back and in the other color it’s switched.) There are other squads with different frames available at the same price in blue and purple. I’m saving my allowance 😬 for some more sets, but I wanted to get the yellow one since it’s the only set in that color and more purple ones are available. The blue set is also cool, but only contains three frames.
So using MantisKing’s criteria for LEGO set reviews for MFZ:
Can you build some sort of creation right away? Yes = +5
Is it at, above, or below the golden ratio for parts? Below = +5
For each frame:
Detection uses 102 parts at $9.74, which is just under $.10 per part.
Crosshairs uses 101 parts at $9.74, which is just under $.10 per part.
Thump uses 124 parts at $9.74, which is $.08 per part.
Quickstrike uses 86 parts at $9.74, which is $.11 per part.
Total: 413 parts at $38.96 comes in at $.09 per part, just squeaking in under the golden ratio.
If you can't build a frame right away, or choose not to, does it have parts you should be able to put into use right away? Clips (1x1 plates with clips to the top and side), pneumatic Ts, Travis bricks (1x1 brick with studs on top and all the sides), and headlight bricks. Yes = +5
Does it have more than a handful of usable parts? Yes = +5
Total: +20 (A+)
My only complaints: (1) the frames use a lot of one-stud connections that are relatively fragile, and I’m still learning how common that is in frame builds. For example, the waist of a Chub is only 1 stud, so it can fall apart there pretty easily. These have a lot more than one.
(2) You have to spend almost $40 on the whole set, which may be a lot to spend at once for one small to average squad. It’s less than $10 per frame, though, which is pretty good.
